Donafay Collins, like many inner city youths lived in a neighborhood filled with several singing groups. Not being blessed with the voice to sing, he quickly got interested in broadcasting which involved something he liked doing (talking for hours at a time).
Donafay first started as a club M.C.in 1972, but soon found his way behind the turntables and later into broadcast booths.
Donafay Majored in Mass Communications at the University of Detroit in 1975. After graduating from the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in 1983, Donafay started his entry-level job at WDRQ FM. He also worked at stations WJZZ FM, WCHB FM and WQHH FM in Lansing. Being a people person and spiritual person, Donafay has strong ties in the community and church.
In 1996, after pursuing a law career and juggling 23 years of "club jocking", Donafay started an air shift on FM 107.5. While at 107.5, he enjoyed a late night music/talk show entitled "The Love Doctor" and later on Friday and Saturday night, an upbeat and exciting music show called "Back Jam" Show to be aired on a powerful, popular, and professional station that led Donafay to Mix 92.3.
Friday Night Back Jam had one of the longest running LIVE broadcasts in the history of MIX 92.3 radio at Club Rapture in the Greektown Casino. The Backjam Block Party was another phenominal Mix event for the summer of 2007 and the party continued inside the Key Club into the end of 2007. Now in 2008 Mix 92.3 Friday night Backjam continues to search for exciting new venues and events for bigger things to come. Mix 92.3 allows Donafay to continue to enjoy meeting.
